612 Washington Boulevard

This building used to house Ecklof & Company, a restaurant supply company.  After they went out of business in 2000/2001, the building was sold to the current owner — it’s been empty ever since.  Grand plans for a condo development came and went — this is situated on a narrow one-way street, and parking for multiple units would be a nightmare. It’s a shame to see this lovely building continue to deteriorate.

About Baltimore Slumlord Watch

Baltimore Slumlord Watch was created in January of 2009, as a way for city residents to discuss and share information on Baltimore’s many bad property owners. Started by a resident who was tired of watching out of town “investors” and others destroy neighborhoods as a result of their negligence, we hope this blog will serve as a valuable service to other city residents who are sick of the problems slumlords cause in our communities. Please note, we do not work for realtors, developers, or property investors, and have no financial interest in property in Baltimore City. View all posts by Baltimore Slumlord Watch

Every time I walk past here, on either Washington or Portland Street, it depresses me that such a cool building is just sitting there. Particularly considering the relatively nice neighborhood and ballpark that surround it.

It really is a wonderful neighborhood — however, it’s situated oddly, and I think it will be a challenge to anyone who wants to develop it.

The redevelopment plan for this building provided interior parking spaces for all of the apartment units. It will be a wonderful project some day. Let’s try not to discourage any interested parties. Here’s a snippet from the project description: “Fifteen apartments, ranging from approximately 800 sf to 1,200 sf each, and 3,000 sf of retail space are proposed, along with on-site parking for the residents. The design restores facades, adds a new fourth floor, community space and shared terraces with great north and south views of Baltimore City.”

Sorry, but I heard from neighbors who were vehemently opposed to this project when it was first proposed — and parking was one of the major issues. The original plan only had a few parking spaces included, and neighbors felt it wasn’t enough.

My aim is to not discourage or encourage — but to report.
