    Not only would you not want to live in any of these, it is impossible to obtain a conventional mortgage for a property next to an abandoned building. Once begun, the downward cycle is hard to break.

      I agree. I can’t see an “Average Joe” homeowner knowing how to go about getting a mortgage or even a construction loan to improve these homes. Which is one of the reasons why I fear these homes will end up in the hands of “investors” who will either flip them, making bare-bones “improvements” or they’ll leave them to continue on the downhill slope.
