This property is owned by one of Baltimore’s worst slumlords, Stanley Rochkind, via one of his many shell companies. Originally added to the blog last May, I thought it would be a perfect addition to the Wall Hunters project — and what better artist to illustrate the problem with this property’s ownership than Gaia?
For so many reasons, this piece brilliantly illustrates one of the glaring problems with slumlord vacant ownership.
Open Walls Baltimore is led by Gaia, and is supported by grants from the PNC Foundation and the NEA. The purpose is to bridge Station North to Greenmount West, through art and collaboration — even if you’re not interested in community development, check out the amazing art! Both neighborhoods have struggled with an overwhelming number of blighted homes and vacant commercial buildings — and we hope this project is the start of something wonderful for these two communities.
